How to read Pick 3 digit frequency without fooling yourself

A digit frequency table is genuinely useful and very easy to misread. The difference is entirely in what you think it is a statement about.

It describes a period, not a machine

A frequency count says how often a digit appeared over a particular stretch of drawings. Change the stretch and the counts change. That is not the data being unreliable — it is what the measurement is. A count without the period attached does not mean anything, which is why every figure in the statistics section says how far back it looked.

Misreading one: an uneven table looks like a signal

Over any finite run of drawings, a perfectly even spread would be the surprising result. Ten digits across a few dozen drawings will always show peaks and troughs, and they move as the period moves. An uneven table is the normal appearance of a fair game.

Misreading two: the gap looks like a countdown

The most tempting figure is how many drawings have passed since a digit last appeared. It is a real, checkable measurement of the past. It is not a forecast. A drawing has no memory, and a digit absent for thirty drawings is exactly as likely as any other in the next one.

Misreading three: two figures from different periods

Comparing a count taken over 60 drawings with one taken over 10 will always favour the longer period, and it is easy to do by accident. Check that both figures came from the same range before drawing any conclusion from the difference.

What it is actually good for

Understanding the shape of the game. How often a repeated digit turns up, how the three digits tend to add up, how one drawing's recorded history compares with the other's. Those are real properties of what has been drawn, and they are worth knowing. None of them tells you what to play.
